Psalm 6

Psalm 6 – A psalm concerning sin

Last week we considered Psalm 5 one of David's imprecatory psalms. Tonight we will look at one of his penitential psalms.  Some would attribute this to the time of sin with Bathsheba. However, there is nothing to indicate this. The believer often receives chastening of the Lord throughout his life.

I.The Lord's Rebuke – (vs 1-3)

Rebuke = prove, reprove, judge, chide, correct, convince, convict, plead

Job 5:17 Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:
Proverbs 3:12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
Proverbs 15:12 A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.
Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Micah 6:2 Hear ye, O mountains, the LORD'S controversy, and ye strong foundations of the earth: for the LORD hath a controversy with his people, and he will plead with Israel.
     A. The Chastening of the Lord (vs 1)
    1. anger – from Heb. nostril
    2. chasten – instruction through discipline (Lev 26:28)
    3. hot displeasure – rage (Gen 27:44)(Dan 9:16)
     B. The Condition of the believer (vs 2)
    1. Mercy needed – to show favor
    2. Weak – feeble, whole strength abated
    3. vexed - terrified, disturbed, alarmed, afraid,
     C. The Call for deliverance (vs 3)

    1. Soul – inner man
    2. how long?
II.The Lord's Return (vs 4-8)

     A. Deliver (vs4)

    1. Return – his lack of presence was the punishment!
    2. Deliver – remove, draw out – (Psalm 40)
    3. Save – liberate, deliver
     B. Death (vs 5)
     C. Depression (vs 6-7)    eye – mental and spiritual qualities
     D. Departure (vs 8)

God did not need the wicked to destroy him in his sin for he had made himself clean before the Lord.

III.The Lord's Reception (vs 9-10)

The Holy Spirit had wrought into the Psalmist's mind the confidence that his prayer was heard. This is frequently the privilege of the saints. Praying the prayer of faith, they are often infallibly assured that they have prevailed with God.

1Jo 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

     A. His confidence in God's Forgiveness
     B. His confidence in God's Faithfulness
