Psalm 22

Re 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
Ge 22:8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.
Php 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

      A. Be not far from me – I need your presence!

11 ¶ Be not far from me;

     1. "for trouble is near;"
     2. "for there is none to help."
     3. Enemies abound – 3 clasifications listed
          a. bulls of Bashan (vs 12) cf Psalm 68:1, 3

Bashan was the finest cattle country beyond Jordan where the largest and fattest cattle in the country were from.

12 Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.

           b. Roaring lions (vs 13-15) cf (John 8:44) (1Peter 5:5-11)

13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.

                i. 14 I am poured out like water,
ii. and all my bones are out of joint:
iii. my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
                iv. 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd;
                v. and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and
               * thou hast brought me into the dust of death.

1Pe 4:19 Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

1Pe 2:23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

               c. Dogs (vs 16) – nothing left of him!  First reference – Ex 22:31 cf (Mt 7:6) also Jer 15:3
                   Mt 15:21-28 // Phil 3:2 , Rev 22:15

16 For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.17 I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me.18 They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture.19 But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.

     B. Deliver my soul – I need your deliverance

20 Deliver my soul from the sword; my darling from the power of the dog.

Soul - Gen 2:7 – Man became a living soul – the soul is a gift from God
Gen 9:4 – life thereof – life is same word

Proverbs 6:30 Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;

1Pe 2:11 Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

darling – Gen 22:2, 12, 16 word only is same word

Judges 11:34 – Jepththah's daughter was his only
     Psalm 25:16 – desolate
Psalm 35:17 Lord, how long wilt thou look on? rescue my soul from their destructions, my darling from the lions.
Psalm 68:6 God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry land.
Zechariah 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

      C. Save me from the lion's mouth.

21 Save me from the lion's mouth: for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.

Heb 5:7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; cf (Heb 12:9)

1Pe 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

Jesus is crying out to the very one who he is submitted to.

2Cor 5:21 He hath made him to be sin for us.

"My meet is to do the will of him that sent me and finish his work".

2Co 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.

22 ¶ I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee. 23 Ye that fear the LORD, praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him, all ye the seed of Israel. 24 For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard. 25 My praise shall be of thee in the great congregation:.....
          2. Paying vows to him (Gen 28:20-22 / Gen 31:13)

25.....I will pay my vows before them that fear him.

Often vows and praise are seen together in the psalms! Showing promises connected with worship and sacrifice.
     B. Satisfaction of the Meek

26 The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the LORD that seek him: your heart shall live for ever. (Mt 5:5) Blessed are the meek...

Meekness is living in humility before God in the sight of man

(1Peter 3:4) (Fruit of the spirit – Gal 5:23 cf Gal 6:1)

     C. Salvation of the nations

27 All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. 28 For the kingdom is the LORD'S: and he is the governor among the nations. 29 All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and worship: all they that go down to the dust shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own soul. 30 A seed shall serve him; it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. 31 They shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

Psalm 18

     A. Strength appreciated! (vs 1) I will love
     B. Strength visualized (vs 2) The Lord is my......
     C. Strength requested (vs 3-6) The sorrows of death / hell
     D. Strength demonstrated (vs 7-17) A storm from God

II.God is my Stay. (vs 18-36) see vs 18
This word is found only in 2Sam 22:19, here in Psalm 17, and in Isaiah 3:1
The context of Isaiah 3:1-10 Illustrates the idea of God being David's stay very well
The stay and staff of Isaiah 3:1 are from the same root.

     A. The staff

As one leans on the staff for support in travel and personal deportment.
David knew what a staff was (Psalm 23:4) thy staff – the tool of the shepherd. He was a shepherd.
But the staff can also have bad implications Ezk 29:6-8

     B. The Stay

But there is a distinction. David did not say staff here but stay. God was not his crutch, a third appendage that he picked up,

NO! God was his full support.

Isaiah 3:1 – the stay of bread and water demonstrates the complete necessity for the survival of man! Without bread and water man will die.

De 33:27 The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

David attributes all the good and blessings that he has enjoyed as being the sole response of God to him.!

The idea of stay has the idea of complete trust and only in the object of trust.

Look at the believer's salvation! Trust is reliance on God without a back up plan.

          1. The benefits of God being your stay: (vs 19)
               a. Brought into a large place
               b. Delivered
               c. Delighted in

           2. The Beginnings of God being your stay (vs 21-38)
               a. Keeping God's Word (21-28)
lighten – Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my   path.
               b. Keeping a humble attitude (vs 29-36)
look at all the times David gives the honor and glory to  God for what was accomplished.
               c. Keeping a faithful loyalty. (vs 37-39)
Who your enemies are says much about you!

III. God is my Salvation. (vs 37 -50) see vs 46

           Great deliverance – vs 50

Ps 74:12 ¶ For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth.

Isa 12:2 Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH is my  strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.

Psalm 17

I. God's Sentence (vs 1-3)

God's judgment of David was not a scary or terrifying situation to David.
David was ready for it,  David longed for it.
He was confident in his righteous behavior.
He was confident in his just condition.

David had been proven of the Lord! (vs 3)

II. God's Salvation (vs 4-7)

      B. God's deliverance is in his path (vs 5)
      C. God's deliverance is in his response to prayer (vs 6)
      D. God's deliverance is in his power (vs 7)

III. God's Shadow (vs 8-12)

     A. Keep me as The apple of the eye.

How God has proven his care of man by placing the eye in such a protected position!

1)The bone structure of the face!
2)The resilience of the eye itself
3)The quick response of the eyelid
4)The filter of the eyelash and eyebrow
     5)The proximity of the hands

Zec 2:8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.

     B. Hide me under the shadow of thy wings

Mt 23:37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

Beneath her fostering wing the HEN defends
          Her darling offspring, while the snow descends;
Throughout the winter's day unmoved defies
          The chilling fleeces and inclement skies;
Till, vanquish'd by the cold and piercing blast,
True to her charge, she perishes at last!
          O Fame! to hell this fowl's affection bear;
Tell it to Progne and Medea there:-
To mothers such as those the tale unfold,
And let them blush to hear the story told!-T. G.

IV. God's Sword (vs 13-14)

Hab 1:12 Art thou not from everlasting, O LORD my God, mine Holy One? we shall not die. O LORD, thou hast ordained them for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.

Isa 10:5 O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation.6 I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

V.God's Satisfaction (vs 15)

Some might argue with me and say that this is David's satisfaction, but I would reply that without God's grace, and God's work in our hearts, we would not seek after God.

We love him because he first loved us! 1Jn 4:19

Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ: Phil 1:6

Psalm 15

The Question and answer Psalm

I. Question: Who shall abide who shall dwell?

This is a question of relationship with the Lord. The Lord manifested his presence to his people at the ark of the Covenenant which was in the tabernacle. David had a tent made for the ark when he was established in the city of David. His holy hill Mt. Zion. Who can abide there? Who can have a relationship with the Holy One of Israel?

II. Answer: The righteous

     A. Truth

          1. He that walketh uprightly, uprightly = in accord with truth

          2. He that worketh righteousness, = commits right works

          3. He that speaketh the truth in his heart. = declares and confirms truth in the inner man

You can determine your true character by seening what you do when no one is looking. What you speak in your heart is what you realy are! "As a man thinketh in his heart so is he."

Pro 23:23 Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

Ps 19:7 ¶ The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple. 8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. 9 The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether. 10 More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. 11 Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. 12 Who can understand his errors? cleanse thou me from secret faults. 13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. 14 Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.

The great transgression is sinning against the great commandment. Thou shalt love the lord thy God with all thy heart soul mind and strength.

     B. Love

          1. He that backbiteth not with his tongue,  = slanders, speaks evil of his neighbor.

          2. nor doeth evil to his neighbour, - evil = unpleasentness, bad

Le 6:2 If a soul sin, and commit a trespass against the LORD, and lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep, or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath deceived his neighbour;

Ex 22:26 If thou at all take thy neighbour's raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down:

          3. nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. Reproach = scorn, shame, to taunt 2Sam 16:5-14

     C. Honor

          * In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD.

Who do we bestow honour on and who do we despise or hold in contempt? We had better honor who God honors and despise who God Despises.

     D. Contentment

          1. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

Judges 11:35 The day of proken promises are upon us. Contracts are no longer honored let alone a handshake.

Do we keep our word?

          2. He that putteth not out his money to usury, Seeking intrest for borrowed money.

Mt 5:40 And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also.

Lu 6:29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.

          3. nor taketh reward against the innocent. - reward = bribe

He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

Mt 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

As we grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, we must acknowledge that patience is a necessary discipline. Being in submission to the Holy Spirit will produce patience.

God commands that we have patience

2Peter 1:5-6 cf Luke 21:5-19

Patience is a part of ministry: 2Cor 6:4, 2Cor 12:12, 1Tim 6:11

Patience is a part of the christian life: Rom 15:5, Col 1:11

Patience produces joy and rejoicing in others 1Thes 1:3, 2Thes 1:4

Patience will be necessary till Christ Comes! 2Thes 3:5,

James 5: 7-11 / Rom 5:1-5, Romans 8:

Let's consider tonight a genuine experience of long suffering.

Here is the key, long suffering has it's sustainability in God.

I.A Concern to be Addressed (vs 1-2) How long?

     A. will I be forgotten? - Hebrew = forgotten
          (Dut 31:16-18) (Job 13) (Psalm 22)

     B. will you be hidden from me? - Hebrew = concealed

     C. will I take counsel in my soul having sorrow in my heart daily? -

     D. will my enemy be exalted over me? (cf vs 4)
Your enemies define you! Who is against you?

Php 1:6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

Heb 13:5-6 – Dut 31:1-7 Ps 118:6

II.A Call to be Considered (vs 3-4)

How do you respond in time of trouble and turmoil? How you respond says everything about you!

     A. Consider me = look to me, regard, pay attention

     B. Hear me = answer me, show hearing by responding

We need to reflect and meditate on the reality of how great it is to

          1) Know God!

          2) Have an audience with God

          3) Have help from God

     C. Lighten me (Ezra 9:8)(Ps 19:8)(Eph 1:18)

III.A Commitment to be Followed (vs 5)

I have trusted in thy mercy

Rom 12:1 By the mercies of God

2Sam 24:14

Neh 19:9

Psalm 25:6 / Psalm 145:9

Lam 3:22 / 32

Dan 9:9

IV.A Commendation to be Given (vs 5-6)

– Faith shines brightest in dark hours.

     A. My heart shall rejoice

     B. I will sing unto the Lord

Habakkuk

Habakkuk

I.Distressed over sin (1:1-4)

Hab 1:1 ¶ The burden which Habakkuk the prophet did see.  O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save! Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up strife and contention. Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore wrong judgment proceedeth.

II.Depressed over Judgment (1:5-2:20)

     A. God is Eternal (1:12)

Ge 21:33; Ex 3:15; 15:18; De 32:40; 33:27; 1Ch 16:36; 29:10; Ne 9:5; Job 36:26; Ps 9:7; 33:11; 41:13; 55:19; 68:33; 90:1,2,4; 92:8; 93:2; 102:12,24-27; 104:31; 111:3; 135:13; 145:13; 146:10; Pr 8:23-25; Isa 26:4; 40:28; 41:4; 43:13; 44:6; 46:4; 48:12; 57:15; 63:16; Jer 10:10; 17:12; La 5:19; Da 4:3,34; Mic 5:2; Hab 1:12; 3:6; Ro 1:20; 16:26; Eph 3:21; 1Ti 1:17; 6:15,16; Heb 1:8; 9:14; 2Pe 3:8; 1Jo 2:13; Re 1:4,6; 4:8-10; 5:14; 10:6; 11:17; 15:7; 16:5

     B. God is Holy (1:13)   Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity:

Ex 3:5; 15:11; 24:9-11; Le 11:44; 19:2; 20:26; 21:8; De 32:4; Jos 5:15; 24:19; 1Sa 2:2; 6:20; 1Ch 16:10; Job 4:17-19; 6:10; 15:15; 25:5; 34:10; 36:23; Ps 11:7; 18:30; 22:3; 30:4; 33:4,5; 36:6; 47:8; 48:1,10; 60:6; 89:35; 92:15; 98:1; 99:3,5,9; 105:3; 108:7; 111:9; 119:142; 145:17; Pr 9:10; Isa 5:16; 6:3; 12:6; 29:19,23; 41:14; 43:14,15; 45:19; 47:4; 49:7; 52:10; 57:15; Jer 2:5; La 3:38; Eze 36:21,22; 39:7,25; Da 4:8; Ho 11:9; Hab 1:12,13; Mt 5:48; 19:17; Mr 10:18; Lu 1:49; 18:19; Joh 7:28; 17:11; Ro 1:23; Heb 1:8; Jas 1:13; 1Pe 1:15,16; 1Jo 1:5; 2:20; Re 4:8; 6:10; 15:4

          1. Habakkuk needed to learn that comparing yourself with the wicked is not wise! (vs 1:13)

comparing ourselves is not wise!(2Cor 10:12)

           2. Habakkuk needed to learn that God's ways are not man's ways. (1:13-17)

all our righteousness is as filthy rags!(Is 64:6)

           3. Habakkuk needed to learn that Faith pleases God (2:4)

without faith it is impossible to please God! (Heb 11:6)

           4. Habakkuk needed to learn that God's righteousness must be respected. (2:4-19)

               a. God knew exactly what the sins of the chaldeans were!

               b. The sins mentioned were much like the sins of God's people that initiated God's judgement.

                    i. The woe of covetousness cf (Is1:21-24)  9 Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, that he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!

ii. The woe of destroying human life (Jer 7:6)(Amos 4:1)(Micah 2:2) 12 Woe to him that buildeth a town with blood, and stablisheth a city by iniquity!

iii. The woe of prompting Drunkenness (cf (Is 5:11, 22)(Is 28)  15 Woe unto him that giveth his neighbour drink, that puttest thy bottle to him, and makest him drunken also, that thou mayest look on their nakedness!

iv. The woe of Idolatry (Is 2:8)(Is 57:4)  19 Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise, it shall teach! Behold, it is laid over with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

     D. God is Sovereign  20 But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.

God met the need of his prophet!

III.Delivered by Faith(3)

     A. The Prayer of Faith (vs 1-2)

     B. The Remembrance of Faith (vs 3-15)

          1. God revealed himself to his people!

3 ¶ God came from Teman, and the Holy One from mount Paran. Selah. His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise. 4 And his brightness was as the light; he had horns coming out of his hand: and there was the hiding of his power.

This refers to the visible display of the glory of God when he gave the law upon Mount Sinai, as appears by De 33:2 whence these expressions are borrowed. Then the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai in a cloud (Ex 19:20) and his glory was as the devouring fire, not only to enforce the law he then gave them, but to avow the deliverance he had wrought for them and to magnify it; for the first word he said there was, "I am the Lord thy God, that brought thee out of the land of Egypt (MHC)

          2. God removed his people! (Ex 6-12)

Some think that this verse refers to God's deliverance of his people from Egypt (Ex 6-12)
         3. God rebuked his people (Num 14:12)

Others believe that it speaks of the judgment that God brought on his people in the wilderness wanderings

(Num 14:12)  5 Before him went the pestilence, and burning coals went forth at his feet.

          4. God rewarded his people!

6 He stood, and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting.

God gave them the land of the heathen for an inheritance.

Ex 3:8 And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

         5. God released his people!

7 I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction: and the curtains of the land of Midian did tremble.

Hebrew expositors refer it to Chushan-rishathaim, king of Mesopotamia, or Syria, the first oppressor of Israel (Jg 3:8,10), from whom Othniel delivered them. Thus the second hemistich of the verse will refer to the deliverance of Israel from Midian by Gideon (Jg 6:1-7:25) to which Hab 3:11 plainly refers. Whichever of these views be correct, the general reference is to God's interpositions against Israel's foes of old. (JFB)

8 Was the LORD displeased against the rivers? was thine anger against the rivers? was thy wrath against the sea, that thou didst ride upon thine horses and thy chariots of salvation?

"Was the cause of His dividing the Red Sea and Jordan His displeasure against these waters?" The answer to this is tacitly implied in "Thy chariots of salvation." "Nay; it was not displeasure against the waters, but His pleasure in interposing for His people's salvation" (compare Hab 3:10). thy chariots--in antithesis to Thy foe, Pharaoh's chariots," which, notwithstanding their power and numbers, were engulfed in the waters of destruction. God can make the most unlikely means work for His people's salvation (Ex 14:7,9,23,25-28; 15:3-8,19). Jehovah's chariots are His angels (Ps 68:17), or the cherubim, or the ark (Jos 3:13; 4:7; compare Song 1:9). (JFB)

9 Thy bow was made quite naked, according to the oaths (Ps 77:8)of the tribes, even thy word. Selah. Thou didst cleave the earth with rivers(Ps 78:15-16). 10 The mountains saw thee, and they trembled: the overflowing of the water passed by: the deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high. 11 The sun and moon stood still in their habitation: at the light of thine arrows they went, and at the shining of thy glittering spear(Josh 10:10-13). 12 Thou didst march through the land in indignation(Ps 68:7), thou didst thresh the heathen in anger. 13 Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, even for salvation with thine anointed; thou woundedst the head out of the house of the wicked, by discovering the foundation unto the neck(Ps 68:21). Selah. 14 Thou didst strike through with his staves the head of his villages: they came out as a whirlwind to scatter me: their rejoicing was as to devour the poor secretly. 15 Thou didst walk through the sea with thine horses, through the heap of great waters.

No obstacle could prevent Thy progress when leading Thy people in safety to their inheritance, whether the Red Sea, Jordan, or the figurative waves of foes raging against Israel (JFB)

     C. The Joy of Faith (vs 16 – 19)

          1. Not according to emotion

16 ¶ When I heard, my belly trembled; my lips quivered at the voice: rottenness entered into my bones, and I trembled in myself,

          2. Not according to circumstances

that I might rest in the day of trouble: when he cometh up unto the people, he will invade them with his troops. 17 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:

          3. Not according to human ingenuity

18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. 19 The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds' feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places.

Heaven

Psalm 23:6 And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

     * From a word meaning lofty. high

     * The Bible speaks of three heavens.

I. There is the first heaven above the earth where the birds fly and the clouds exist.

Ps 104:12 By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches.

Ge 7:11 ¶ In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened

II. There is the second heaven where the planetary bodies travel their orbit around the sun, and where the stars hold the station God gave them.

Job 22:12 Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are!

III. There is the third heaven

2 Cor 12:2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.

     A. Moses called it the heaven of heavens

De 10:14 Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the LORD'S thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.

     B. The heavens are spoken of in scripture as a plurality, a group.

     C. The heavens are:

          1.The Display of God's Greatness

Ps 8:3-4 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Isa 45:12 I have made the earth, and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded.

Isa 45:18 For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

           2.The Declaration of God's Glory

Ps. 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.

          3.The Distance of measurement exposed

Ezr 9:6 And said, O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift up my face to thee, my God: for our iniquities are increased over our head, and our trespass is grown up unto the heavens.

Job 20:4 Knowest thou not this of old, since man was placed upon earth, 5 That the triumphing of the wicked is short, and the joy of the hypocrite but for a moment? 6 Though his excellency mount up to the heavens, and his head reach unto the clouds;7 Yet he shall perish for ever like his own dung:they which have seen him shall say, Where is he? Cf Gen 11:4

Ps 8:1 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

Ps 108:4 For thy mercy is great above the heavens: and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.

          4.The Dwelling place of God.

2Ch 6:33 Then hear thou from the heavens, even from thy dwelling place, and do according to all that the stranger calleth to thee for; that all people of the earth may know thy name, and fear thee, as doth thy people Israel, and may know that this house which I have built is called by thy name.

Cf - 1Ki 8:27 But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded?

Psalm 115:4 read all!!

La 3:41 Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens.

Ac 7:56 And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

Lu 12:33 Sell that ye have, and give alms; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treasure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth corrupteth.

          7.The deliverance of the Believers.

Re 12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

          8.The Destruction of Evil.

2Pe 3:1-7

Joe 2:30 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.

Joe 3:16 The LORD also shall roar out of Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the heavens and the earth shall shake: but the LORD will be the hope of his people, and the strength of the children of Israel.

See Psalm 57

     D. The heavens are spoken of in their relationship as one and cohesive, this is because they all share a common position. High and lofty above man. And connected to the almighty and his purpose.

Ec 5:2 Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.

     E. Heaven is also addressed in the singular.  * The third heaven

                     ii. to Satan – Job 1:6 – 12 / 2:1-7

iii. to the Saints – Acts 7:56-60 / Heb 4:16

iv. to the sorrows of wickedness -

Ge 4:10 And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

Ge 18:20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;

James 5:4 Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.

     B. It is the place of Christ's work - At the right hand of God
1.He is adding to the church - Acts 2:41-47

2.He is functioning as our forerunner – Heb 6:18-20

That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: 19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; 20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Forerunner = shipping term of the scout boat that went ahead to look for a safe lane into port.

3.He is preparing a place for believers – John 14:2

In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. / Rev 21

4.He is enabling his Church with gifts – Eph 4:7-13

5.He is encouraging his people – Heb 4:14-16

Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

Cf Heb 216-18

6.He is praying for his believers -

              a. intercession -

Ro 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.

(cf John 17)

               b. advocacy -

1Jo 2:1 ¶ My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

          7. He is taking care of his Churches – Rev 2-3 read Rev 1:9-20

     C. It is the place of the believer's future

          1.  The presence of the Lord with his people

               a. Those that die in the Lord. 2Cor 5:6-8

               b. Those that are caught up. 1Thes 4:16-17

     A prepared place - John 14:1-11

I go to prepare a place for you

     A Blessed Hope

Ac 1:11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Php 3:20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
Col 1:5 For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel;Col 1:6 Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth:

Tit 2:13-14 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

     A reserved inheritance -

1Peter 1:3 -9¶ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 ¶ Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: 7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: 8 Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: 9 Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls.

Acts 20:32

Eph 1:1-14 – The down payment of our inheritance is the Holy Spirit! Think of what the Holy Spirit accomplishes in the life of a believer now, his presence is just a taste of what we will have for all eternity!

John 14:16-20 – Watch the continuing work unfold

John 14:4 the way ye know

John 14:20 – in that day ye shall know – Pentecost

Rom 8: - In the day of our faith being made sight, we will know our inheritance fully!

Lu 12:32 Fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

     2. The Judgment seat of Christ

Reward of the inheritance

Col 3:18-25 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. 19 Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. 20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord. 21 Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. 22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: 23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. 25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

2Cor 5:10-11

Paul understood that there was a reward for his service to Jesus Christ.

1Cor 9!

The Judgment seat - Bema gr. was the term from the Isthmian games where the athletes competed for a laurel wreath (corruptible crown) The judges on the bema watched to see that every rule was obeyed. Dis-qualification was the result of not striving lawfully. Does it matter if you serve God according to the truth and instruction of the Scriptures? Yes!

Rom 14:10 / 1Cor 3 - temple cf 2Cor 6

We strive for an incorruptible crown!

1Thes 2:19-20 -a crown of rejoicing (Phil 4:1)

2Tim 4:8 – a crown of righteousness

James 1:12 – a crown of life – (Rev 2:10)

1Peter 5:4 – a crown of glory

2Ti 2:1-5 -

Isaac Watts wrote

Am I a soldier of the cross, A follower of the Lamb,
And shall I fear to own His cause, Or blush to speak His Name?

Must I be carried to the skies On flowery beds of ease,
While others fought to win the prize, And sailed through bloody seas?

Are there no foes for me to face? Must I not stem the flood?
Is this vile world a friend to grace, To help me on to God?

Refrain

And when the battle’s over We shall wear a crown!
Yes, we shall wear a crown! Yes, we shall wear a crown!
And when the battle’s over We shall wear a crown
In the new Jerusalem
Wear a crown (wear a crown) Wear a crown (wear a crown)
Wear a bright and shining crown; And when the battle’s over
We shall wear a crown In the new Jerusalem.

Christ our example

John 19:1-5 Behold the Man

Rev 4:4, 9-11 – Casting their crowns – Behold the King! Cf

Wouldn't it be something to discover that the reward we have worked for in this life was our way to give above the voice of praise, and put at his feet a tangible representation of our lives! A demonstration of sacrifice for his great love for us . We love him because he first loved us!

Re 6:2 And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer. Cf Rev 14:14 1 Crown / Rev 19:11-12 many crowns

Re 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

Warning - Rev 3:11 – that no man take thy crown! - cf Mt 25:15-28

Mt 25 is not dealing with the Church it is dealing with Israel in the tribulation. However, the mind of God concerning stewardship, faithfulness and reward is demonstrated here.

After the judgment seat of Christ:

     3. The marriage of the lamb

Rev 19:7-9

Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

     3. The return with Christ

Rev 19:11-21

Jude 1:14 And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints,

Mt 24:27-30

     4. The millennial reign

Rev 20

2Ti 2:12 If we suffer, we shall also reign with him: if we deny him, he also will deny us:

Re 5:10 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. Cf - (1Peter 2:9)

1Co 15:21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming. 24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power. 25 For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.

According to the millennial Scripture passages The millennial Kingdom will be characterized by
    1. Righteousness
    2. Obedience
    3. Holiness
    4. Truth
    5. Fullness of the Spirit

Conditions in the kingdom will be: fruit of Christ's leadership / the same things that are evident in the life of Spirit filled believers! Is Jesus Christ king of your life?

Psalm 72 / 2Chor 9:1-12 cf Mt 12:42

     6. The future state.

Rev 21-22

Rev 21:9 I will show thee the Bride the Lamb's wife.

Ps 23:6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. The final sheep fold!

Heb 11:8 By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. 9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise: 10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. (See Heb 12:22-23)

Re 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

Re 22:20 ¶ He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
