Psalm 4


  1. David's Cry unto God (1)
    A. His Confidence in prayer
    B. His Consideration of past help.
    C. His Cry for mercy and audience.
  2. David's Confession to the sons of men (2-5)
    A. His question concerning their ungodliness (vs 2)
      Turn glory to shame – God's favor on him was shunned by the wicked
      love vanity – empty life with no profit
        Ps 39:6 Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.
      seek after leasing – lying
          B. His Comment concerning the godly (vs 3)
    1. The Lord will set apart the godly unto himself
    2. The Lord will hear when I call
  1. Ps 18:3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
         C. David's Commands to the sons of men (vs 4-5)
        1. Stand in awe cf Joel 2:1 tremble
        2. sin not – Hos 4:7
        3. commune with your own heart upon your bed
        4. be still – grow silent Job 29:21 / Amos 5:13
        5. offer the sacrifices of righteousness – offer = kill
        6. put your trust in the lord -confidence in, be fearless

  1. David's Contentment in God (6-8)
    A. In spite of the lack of faith by others! (vs 6)
      many that say – the many vs the few
      who – where is your focus?
      Any good – that which is agreeable, pleasant or pleasing
        psalm 23 – the voice of a wondering sheep!
        Psalm 84:11 – no good thing will he
    B. In contrast to the values of others! (vs 7)
      Gladness in my heart - glad
1 archaic : having a cheerful or happy disposition by nature
2 a : experiencing pleasure, joy, or delight : made happy b : made pleased, satisfied, or grateful —often used with of <was glad of their help
3 a : marked by, expressive of, or caused by happiness and joy <a glad shout> b : causing happiness and joy : pleasant <glad tidings>
4 : full of brightness and cheerfulness <a glad spring morning>
        1. Ps 9:2 I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.
        2. Ps 14:7 Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the LORD bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad
        3. Ps 21:6 For thou hast made him most blessed for ever: thou hast made him exceeding glad with thy countenance.
        4. Ps 32:11 Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.
        5. Ps 40:16 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: let such as love thy salvation say continually, The LORD be magnified.
        6. Ps 48:11 Let mount Zion rejoice, let the daughters of Judah be glad, because of thy judgments.
        7. Ps 64:10 The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.
        8. Ps 68:3 But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.
        9. Ps 70:4 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.
        10. Ps 104:34 My meditation of him shall be sweet: I will be glad in the LORD.
        11. Ps 122:1 ¶ I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.
        12. Ps 126:3 The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

More than in the time that their wine and corn increased.

Isa 9:3 ....they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, and as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

Ps 126:5 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
6 He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

    C. In exclusion of all other sources of help. (vs 8)
Peace and rest is in the Lord
